The challenge

Steve Jurkovich, Chief Executive of Kiwibank, sat down to chat with Sir John Kirwan, Co-founder of Groov to discuss the partnership.

Yeah, we had 3 priorities. One was the health, safety and wellness of our own people. Secondly, what would we do to protect our customers? And thirdly, what would we do to protect our stakeholders and shareholders? And so for us, we wanted to start within the boundaries of our own organisation, because we knew that people were feeling anxious about having to support customers and what they could do. So, sort of eat your own dog food. Start with us and then support it getting out to the wider community.

The solution

How’s your use of Groov been so far?

Yeah, I mean the interesting thing for me is about how people are using the app. If I am an example, I use it a lot sometimes and have a few days where I don’t use it at all. But actually some of the habits and rituals that I’ve picked up from it, I notice myself if I’m not in a great space, thinking actually I’ve got a tool I can go use. And then other times rather than just endlessly scrolling something, I’m actually listening to the interview you did with Mick Fanning or picking up on something else. And actually what I’ve been finding is that it's been easier to pass a wellbeing idea onto someone else and say maybe have a think about this. So I think some people are using it in that way. And other people really like to start their day off with that. So I think it’s flexible, it’s open and growing all the time, so I think it’s going to continue to be really useful.

You were amazing at throwing your support behind Groov (formerly Mentemia) at the start of the Covid pandemic. Why did you decide to get behind it and help get it out to all New Zealanders?

Well one, we were searching for a way that we could have impact at scale and even though we’re a big organisation, we’re pretty small in the scheme of things, so we don’t need to do everything ourselves. So how can we partner with someone, a bit lighter touch so we can reach more people? And also the personal impact you’ve had JK, but also Adam Clark your business partner - who I’d worked with before - and so you know just instinctively it felt like these are the right people that can have an impact, and it felt like the right time, and so why not get behind it?
