Simplifying psychosocial risk management

What is psychosocial risk management and how does Groov solve for it in the workplace? Read on for highlights from our live demo with Groov’s Guy Alexander.

Earlier this week, Groov’s Champion of Customers, Guy Alexander, hosted an exclusive live demo about how Groov can help to simplify psychosocial risk management in the workplace.

In this engaging 30-minute demo, Guy covered:

  • What is psychosocial risk management?

  • How exactly does Groov help solve for it?

  • Quick demo of the Groov workplace wellbeing platform

What is psychosocial risk management?

Psychosocial risk management is all about reducing the likelihood of psychosocial hazards causing harm in the workplace. Some examples of psychosocial hazards include workplace harassment, workplace conflict, poor organisational change management, and lack of role clarity.

It may feel like a big, scary, complex topic, but Guy encourages leaders to think of it as an opportunity to create high-performance teams where trust and psychological safety is the norm.

“Psychosocial risk management is more than just about preventing ill health and negative outcomes on our people and our teams. It’s really about creating an environment where people can thrive, they can be themselves, they can reach their full potential, which is ultimately going to unlock the full potential of your workplace,” explains Guy.

“I think this is an exciting opportunity for all of us to drive high performance through people that feel good and function well, as well as also meeting some compliance obligations that are important and we all have.”

The 4-step psychosocial risk management process

The 2021 ISO standard (ISO 45003) provides clear guidelines for what good looks like when it comes to psychosocial risk management, and how that might be achieved in different workplaces.

A core element of the ISO 45003 standard is the 4-step psychosocial risk management process: 1) Identify; 2) Assess; 3) Eliminate or minimise; 4) Review effectiveness.

  1. Identify: This is about identifying the potential hazards in terms of work design, the work environment, the way people interact with each other, and what does good like for your organisation.

  2. Assess: Next, it’s important to assess the risks in terms of their nature, how likely they are going to happen, and if they do happen, what the impact of that will be on your workplace.

  3. Eliminate or minimise: What are the things or controls that we can put in place that either eliminate or minimise those psychosocial risks?

  4. Review effectiveness: It’s important to constantly measure, review, and change what’s being implemented.

Guy acknowledges that the fourth point in particular – review effectiveness – can feel quite hard.

“We’re trying to make it a lot easier for workplaces to review effectiveness on a regular basis. With the beauty of data, we can do that in a far more efficient way,” says Guy.

How does Groov solve for psychosocial risks?

Groov can help workplaces manage psychosocial risks at each step of the way. To understand how this works, it’s worth taking a moment to understand the science behind Groov.

Guy explains: “Groov is grounded in brilliant clinical and behavioural change science and research. We have an amazing clinical team here that take the world-class science that’s out there and turn it into tools and products that our workplace customers, and individuals in those workplaces, are going to get real value and benefit from.”

The Groov wellbeing-first approach is for individuals, leaders, and organisational environments.

Individual: Everything starts with empowering individuals in workplaces to be their best selves, to have the right things in their day, to feel good and function well.

Leaders: Leaders are critical. Groov helps to lift leaders, build their capability, and get them doing the right stuff – not as another job, but as part of what their day looks like.

Environment: If you empower individuals and lift leaders, this optimises the workplace environment, which leads to an organisation that operates way better, leaders that lead better, and individuals that live and work better.

“Groov’s wellbeing-first approach supports people to feel good, function well, and perform at the level you need them to,” says Guy.

The Groov wellbeing frameworks

Groov’s evidence-based wellbeing frameworks solve for individual and workplace wellbeing in two distinct, but related, ways.

The two most important frameworks to understand for psychosocial risk management are the Groov Workplace Framework (the four outer semi circles below) and the 6 Pillars of Individual Wellbeing (the six inner circles).

The Workplace Framework: Within this framework exists the Groov Workplace Temperature Check, which works as a risk assessment for important psychosocial hazards across your workplace. It shows where your organisation is right now in terms of wellbeing and psychosocial hazards, and also helps you understand where to focus your efforts and what you can do to improve. The Workplace Temperature Check is a fundamental tool for organisations that want to become psychosocial risk compliant.

The 6 Pillars of Individual Wellbeing: This framework helps everyone in your organisation to feel good and function well. It’s about doing small daily habits across the 6 Pillars, which are Chill, Do, Connect, Celebrate, Move, and Enjoy. This helps people to be their best selves and improve performance. The 6 Pillars are grounded in the Five Ways to Wellbeing.

Both frameworks are highly effective because they are action-oriented.

“Frameworks are great, but we really want people to take action. Even if it’s a small step in the right direction, that’s a win and we should celebrate that,” says Guy.

“The Groov frameworks are also connected to people’s values, people’s purpose, their strengths and their interests, which means people are more likely to engage, which means we’re going to see the small daily actions that we want, which will be fantastic from a psychosocial risk mitigation perspective.”

The Groov platform

The Groov wellbeing frameworks inform every element of the Groov platform, which is made up of different digital tools for you and your people.

“We have an amazing digital platform that will meet your people where they are and offers a range of experiences that caters to the very diverse workforces we have in our workplaces today, and ultimately is about people taking small, daily actions,” explains Guy.
